Jim Murphy is a former Air Force pilot and now a successful commerical airline pilot. Jim takes us on his journey from his first solo flight as a teenager, through his career in the military and into his current role as Captain of a 737 aircraft with American Airlines. Jim has decades of experience in the aviation industry and provides us with helpful tips for getting started as a pilot through various paths, with or without college. There are a few moments during our conversation where I’m left practically speechless. And for anyone that knows me, that rarely happens! Captain Jim Murphy has been flying just about his entire life and has had a very impressive career in both the military and in commercial aviation.

  • Purdue University & NROTC, 4 years, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical & Astronautical Engineering

  • A-10 single-seat ground-attack fighter, 3 years in Europe
  • T-38 advanced supersonic trainer Instructor pilot, 3 years in Mississippi
  • American Airlines B-727 Flight Engineer, 5 yrs
  • MD-80 First Officer, 5 yrs
  • T-38 Air Force Reserve Instructor pilot, 6 more yrs, part-time while at American Airlines
  • B-757/767 First Officer, 5yrs
  • B-777 First Officer, 5 yrs
